Yolanda Stapleton originally studied advertising before moving into graphics after graduating. Since then she has produced works in product, photography, fashion and illustration, although graphics remains her primary area of interest. Working on setting up her label ‘Onetrickpony’ Yolanda has also been exhibiting quite extensively with work shown recently in Perth, Melbourne and Tokyo. Her first solo show is set for July and will be an exhibition of the ‘tiny people with rage’ series.

Yolanda was recently involved in the ‘Reunion’ show at Breadbox Gallery.
“I produced a set for the exhibition titled ‘Fire!’ it’s based in graphics but I wanted to move away from computer-generated work, which lead to this outcome. The use of non traditional media was great in terms of visual impact but also in terms of unpredictability, I had an idea of what I wanted as the end result but working with fire meant that the final outcome was never certain.”

Carine Thevenau is a freelance photographer specialising in the fields of advertising, editorial, music and fashion. Her artistic vision varies from conceptual, ideas based images through to raw photojournalistic styles. Carine’s interest in photography dates back to PIAC, a youth extended learning program which she attended at the age of 8, where she produced a series of black and white, self developed photographic works as part of an assessed project. Her love and passion for the photographic medium has led to a successeful career and in 2004 was labelled “a leading photographer of tomorrow” by Ilford photographics when she was selected to exhibit as part of the Photo Imaging World Exhibition” in Darling Harbour, Sydney. Carine’s images have been shown in galleries across Australia and more recently at the Los Angeles Centre Of Digital Art in the United States.

Drassman emerged onto the local club scene with his immediately recognisable illustrations and event posters.

Proficient with most media, his early beginnings with watercolour and ink eventually graduated to digital art. His style remains flexible, ranging from comic book graphics to photorealism.

Best recognised for the art for the Perth Destination? gigs and the Cottesloe Beach Hotel, his work can also been seen in Sydney, Melbourne and overseas.

His art remains fun, occasionally tongue-in-cheek and ever evolving.

When not scouring the social scene for his next muse, he can be found either sipping lychee martinis or saving the world.

Amanda Brown does not confine herself to any one area in the media of Photography, “I observe and document whatever is happening at the time,” she says. “Over the years I have built up a series of work ranging from landscape, industrial, social documentation to portraiture and streetscape.

“One series of industrial images is titled ‘Vanishing City’. I have spent a lot of time over the years documenting the changes to the inner landscape of the city of Perth. In a sense this is a vanishing city. We are so used to seeing the demolition we never stop to question why. Redevelopment after redevelopment: it never stops until most of the original buildings that shaped the city are gone. Over the years the opinion has been, ‘If it is old, tear it down,’ without considering the heritage of future generations.

“’Ship to Sea’ documents the Fremantle Wharf from the train, and the view to the wharf from abandoned buildings on the near streets. I spent a long time documenting military from around the world (especially American warships), rallies against their visits, the Wharfies strike, and also just the general life of the place itself. Unfortunately, I cannot photograph on the wharf itself anymore for security reasons, so I have had to adjust to another way of viewing, and still film a place that I find very fascinating.”

Gavin Feilding is a designer and artist based in Perth. His work is influenced by the millions of messages and absurd amounts of information we are exposed to in our society. In both his design and art Feilding tries to communicate the contradictions and the conscious dishonesty of the mainstream media. “I find it disturbing that many of the people I know and care for don’t think twice about what the read in the paper or see on television. They don’t question how it is influencing the way they think and act in their day to day lives.” He finds the way we are exposed to the same messages over and over again an insult to the intelligence of people as individuals and also as groups. “I can’t remember the last time I watched the news, if it can be called that, without getting angry or pointing out some form of fraudulent information or dishonest reporting.”

Feilding is currently working on his first solo exhibition entitled TV Stole My Virginity. It focus’s on capturing the emotion and aesthetic of youths, those of us who are exposed to the majority of the messages Feilding’s work explores.

Since launching his career as an proscribed visual artist in 1984, Mills has carved a distinctive niche for his work that has seen him showcased internationally to critical acclaim. His work has crossed many boundaries with representation in exhibitions in London, Birmingham , Berlin, Los Angeles, Melbourne and Perth.

His solo exhibitions held in Perth in 1999 and 2003 were hugely successful with both shows selling out on opening night and resulting in numerous private commissions. In 2002 he achieved a Commendation Award in the highly competitive “City of Perth Invitational Art Award” and in May 2005 was invited to London as a guest speak at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts to launch the Thames & Hudson publication “Graffiti World”. Late in 2006 he will present works in Tokyo and Taipei before returning to his third solo show in Perth in May 2007 followed by another in Melbourne in July of the same year.

He has been commissioned to create works in both Los Angles and London and in 2002 was invited to create large scale murals across Greece in preparation for the Olympics.

Mills’ work is a deeply personal narrative about emotions captured in the layers of his works, depictions from intense observations of the texture of life to engage and challenge the viewer to explore beyond the surface to find real beauty amidst the decay.

Justin Randall spends his days at Curtin University lecturing about Digital Illustration and his nights in a studio actually doing it. You can find his work in the odd magazine and the occasional comic book. Currently he is working on a few graphic novels for offshore publishers and will soon release his own project titled ‘Changing Ways’.

He doesn’t sleep much, prefers listening to movies rather than music and can be a right bastard when he has a looming deadline.

18 year old Brendan favours drawing cartoon characters and random creatures over anything else, also starting to dabble in graffiti art.

“I’d always had an interest in art, even as a kid. But I only really took an interest in it about 4 years ago when I actually started animating and drawing pieces for critique. After I landed a job a ‘company blank’ I spent about a year and a half doing design work with Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and a mess of other programs” says Brendan.

Brendan draws inspiration from artists and animators like Dan Paladin, Adam Phillips, Andre Nguyen, Tom Fulp, Shawn Hollern. Brendan has stepped away from animation for now and has been concentrating on game design and programming projects.

“Robots are super cool.”, says Deathbot when asked why that’s about the only thing ever drawn by this middle aged Perth artist. “so’s booze”, he adds, explaining why when you check out any Deathbot shit, said robots are, were or about to be drunk.
“what else are they gonna do? It’s only gonna take ‘em about an hour a day to get all their work done. Then what? The obviously don’t want to hang around with jerk humans, so they’ll just get pissed.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” I demand.
“the future, that’s what.” The future indeed.

Anyway, the pictures are real nice. If idiot industrial designers don’t rip Deathbot off when designing the first wave of mechanical men, then God help us all. We’ll probably end up with some stupid mannequin looking monstrosity. Or worse. Obviously I’m influenced by Deathbot’s pictures, and thus can’t really picture what else robot’s could look like.

Nathan’s passion for photography began unexpectedly in 2003 when his girlfriend bought a small compact 3 mega pixel digital camera. With the ability to review results instantly the realisation dawned to him that a digital camera was a good way to teach yourself a little bit about photography. The quest for capturing images that stood above the average “snapshot” was underway. Well over a year later a growing frustration with the limitations of a basic point and shoot highlighted the fact that his initial casual interest had become a bit of an obsession.

In 2004 while living and working in Darwin Nathan took the plunge and purchased a NIKON D70 digital SLR. He resolved to learn how to use the camera properly and switched it to fully MANUAL mode immediately. Over the past 2 years Nathan has focused on natural and urban Landscape photography. “Landscape photography gives me great pleasure and a sense of ‘interaction’ with the world around me. I strive to capture images that invite the viewer to experience scenes and moments that may otherwise go unnoticed” says Nathan.

From time to time Nathan has pointed his lens at people, but it tends to be in a passive manner. Currently he mainly limits himself to observation and candid photography. “I have tried my hand at wedding photography a couple of times and wish to develop more skills in both formal and candid people photography. I would like to take some time in the future to undertake some formal study in photography. One day I may even look at getting paid to do it on a full or part time basis. To this day my D70 has remained on MANUAL mode”.

Recently acknowledge by Joy Legge (Art Bank) in Insite Magazine as an artist to collect for under $5000, Spencer has had several group exhibitions both in Western Australia and interstate, as well as a sellout solo exhibition.

Spencer’s attack of the canvas with vibrant and dramatic colour, rhythm, pattern and symbol, is stimulated from a modern industrial world. His paintings are emotionally charged as he abandons artistic control to push, experiment and express. With these elements combined, we discover a composition that both dignifies his imagination and the subject he chooses to explore.

Although Shem was born and bred in W.A., he really only discovered his passion for photography whilst living and working in Melbourne. “The arts scene in that city is fantastic and at that stage I was shooting with one of Kodak’s first 1.2 megapixel cameras” After organising a work transfer back to Perth his interest in photography grew strong, but felt like he was lacking a basic understanding of photography, particularly the fundamentals of composition.

The first semi-serious step for Shem was the purchase of a Fuji Finepix S5500 – this was a fantastic camera and for a 4mp point & shoot (it looked like a mini SLR) produced some great pictures. “It had semi manual modes such as shutter & aperture priority as well as a full-manual mode on the camera and this combined with a short course with Greg Edwards studios in Northbridge taught me more in 1 year than I’d ever learned previously” Shem went on to add.

He has recently purchased a Canon EOS20D D-SLR and loves it. “It’s very different when moving from a point & shoot, mainly due to a more accurate depth of field, and of course almost-instant auto focus. It’s also taught me more on manual exposure, and manual focusing”. He has been working with an ISP here in Perth for the past year and a half. “There’s always demand here for pictures for use in the marketing department, and this is something I’d eventually love to do down the track”.

In the meantime, Shem is just enjoying getting out there, taking photos and evolving as a photographer. His main focus seems to be on still life, but also has an interest in portraits and street photography. He now lives in Leederville with his wife who is also taking an interest in photography as well. “I’m planning on doing more study to further improve my technique. The ultimate dream for me would be to turn my passion into a fully-paid career”. Small beginnings but big plans lie ahead for this up-and-coming photographer.

Gail Devine is a ‘big drawer’ who jumps around all over the place. She likes to draw on big expanses of paper, then combine drawing over painting and painting over printmaking.

Her work is widely recognised in Australia and overseas for her large calligraphic drawing effects on paper and for her mark making on drop canvas.

She has won several awards for drawing and painting and exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, England and in South America.

She works from a studio in Woodbridge, Perth.

Currently she is working towards two solo exhibitions, one in Manila and one in Sydney this year.

Graham Hay’s unusual paperclay sculptures are often inspired by architecture and unique Western Australian flora. Hundreds of individual parts are organised into structures, to suggest social organizations.

The new medium of paperclay (processed cellulose fibre mixed with clay, and later fired) has enabled him to push the physical and expressive boundaries of ceramics. It has also led to invitations to give workshops across the country, and globe. Originally a by-product of making his paperclay, Graham also developed new techniques to compress and carve paper into sculptures (no glue). Over time the amount of information coming at us has grown, as well as the scale of the work.
