Ryan Boserio likes planes

Posted by admin On September - 21 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

Ryan Boserio is an emerging Perth artist, and he likes planes.

“I like the idea that a model plane can be used to fool people when
taking a picture of the finished product. There have been documented
cases where individuals who build models of planes have had the
authorities attention brought about, due to the fact that a photo of a
particular plane may be a security risk. This phenomenon has also been
prevalent with those that are affectionately known as “plane
spotters”, people who are at airports documenting planes and flight
paths, perhaps not because a photo of a plane is a security risk but
for another analogous security reason.

In both cases utilitarian design has been adopted for a purpose other
than the one for which it was intended, which we, as a society are
uncomfortable with.

For me, this presents an interesting blur between art and design as
well. For instance; is the creative act a documentation of plane paths
and numbers or is the creative act the flying of those planes that
are being documented? Is art the of building model planes or is it the
photographing those model planes in order for them to be appreciated
by other model plane builders? The answer is most likely both.”

Deejo is an Illustrator and graphic Designer based in Perth.

I have been drawing since I was 5. My first love was dinosaurs, and I used to draw them everyday until I found comic books. 2000AD was a massive influence on me when I was a kid, me and a friend of mine used to copy all the frames and try and draw in the different styles. When I found out some of my favourite comic book artists had a Graphic Design background I went and did a TAFE course.

So since then I have been thrust into the world of Graphic Design. An Illustrator at heart, I have always looked for a way to use that in my designs. I have been lucky enough to be involved in the local hip-hop scene through my long association with the mighty Syllabolix crew of musicians, and have done over a hundred different gig posters for various hip hop acts and clubs over the last 5 years.

While my history lies in digital illustration, recently I have branched out and gotten back to my roots and started painting canvas again. This has really ignited my craving for producing art, and I hope to have my first exhibition sometime soon in the future.

Illustration has been my primary creative interest since early 2006 – up until then I was more focused on film and animation. Most of the work that I have done over the last year or so has revolved around the music scene, be it artwork for bands, or the split exhibition I did at Keith & Lottie last year – which was all about the relationship between songs and pictures. At the moment I am trying to shift more into editorial/advertising illustration, and am planning some small animation projects. I am also looking at doing a solo show later this year.

There isn’t anything that outrageous about my style, really – I draw mostly people and animals, with simple linework and a limited colour palette. But I never start a drawing unless there is a good idea behind it, and I prefer subjects that’ll get some sort of reaction out of people – I don’t mind if that reaction is ‘vaguely amused’ or ’slightly disturbed’, as long as the image makes you feel something, and can hold your attention for more than 2 seconds.

This year I have had work published in the Semi-Permanent book and on the cover of Queensland’s Flying Arts Annual, and will have an illustration featured in the next issue of Frankie magazine.

Pierre Croft

Pierre is a Perth based graphic designer and illustrator with a varied design career. Originally studying and working in web design, he moved into the print industry which allowed his interest in art and technology to combine more fruitfully. He has since shifted into the area of digital graphics and illustration in a more professional context, working at a startup advertising and design studio. Having recently completed his studies he intends to pursue these areas with gusto.

Pierre grew up admiring many comic books and cartoons, particularly Tintin – loving the clean outlines and detailed scenes of Herge’s creation. He often incorporates these influences into much of his illustration work.

Pierre draws particular inspiration from pre production artwork and concepts found in the video game and motion picture industries, and the huge range of techniques employed in visualizing these creations through to completion. It is one area where he would love to work in one day….
