A fresh series of ballpoint pen and mixed media works on paper by gifted young Perth artist, Andy Quilty will feature in the Back Space Gallery at Linton and Kay Contemporary in February, launching at 6.30pm Friday the 17th Feb 2012 and running through to the 2nd of March.

Titled ‘The Fear’, Quilty articulates his refl ections about the self reproach and anxiety which weighs upon us all when the realisation is made that we have not become the person that we intended or hoped we would be. He argues that The Fear is always present, emerging from the incessant need to achieve some kind of meaning or greatness from the time that we have been gifted… governed over by the inevitability of death.

Primarily utilising the biro, Quilty’s evocative, heavily detailed pen and spraypaint works include crumbling human and animal skulls which pierce the viewer with vacuous gazes, purposefully coupled with the ‘newness’ of babies in nappies wearing Storm Trooper helmets or affi xed with disproportionately sized animal skulls. Brightly coloured spraypaints stream down the paper imparting a sense of immediacy and ‘graffi ti like’ impermanence to the works.

When commenting on ‘The Fear’ Quilty states, “It’s a sense of worry and unease. Have I knowingly abused the time I have been granted?” He muses over the decisions he and his friends have made in their lives, the majority of them employed in Western Australia’s mining, construction, and oil and gas sectors. “As a group of young West Australian males, we have made different choices and chosen different avenues in the hope of fi nding some form of contentment, in spite of this the inescapable contagion of ‘The Fear’ infects us all.”

It is inevitable that our hopes and dreams for the future can never fully match reality. ‘The Fear’ is perhaps a burden we create and cannot escape, powered by the constant need to want for a better existence.
